2015 is the international year of light

Highly related to retinal research! No vision without light! :)

Our paper in Nature Neuroscience!!

Our paper "Retinal output changes qualitatively with every change in ambient illuminance" is finally published in Nature Neuroscience!

Here we investigated the effect of changes in ambient illuminance on the retinal output and fount that the retina encodes the same stimuli differently at each different illuminance. For example, an OFF-cell might become an ON-OFF-cell simply due to a 1 log change in illuminance. Or another cell might change it's central response while keeping its response to full-field stimuli. We found further changes also to more complex stimuli such as natural movies and also in in-vivo LGN recordings.

What does this mean for the retinal code? Much work to do in the future...

Interesting new paper about the role of rods under photopic conditions

Posted on November 21, 2014 at 11:40 AM Comments comments (0)

Rods in daylight act as relay cells for cone-driven horizontal cell-mediated surround inhibition.

Tamás Szikra and colleagues published their work on the role of rod photoreceptors under photopic conditions, i.e. bright light conditions under which rods were thought to be inactive due to saturation.
